Nach einigen Jahren praktischer Arbeit im elterlichen Geschäft drängte es ihn, seine Kenntnisse in Philosophie und Literatur zu erweitern. Er studierte an der Universität Zürich und promovierte 1945 mit einer Dissertation über Fichte, Schelling und Hegel ("Ein klassisches Gespräch") in Philosophie bei Eberhard Grisebach mit den Nebenfächern Romanistik und Germanistik. Seit 1964 widmete er sich ausschliesslich seinem philosophischen Werk. Als begeisterter Sportler zog es ihn seit seiner Jugend immer wieder in die Berge, wo er 1987 abstürzte.
